Overview
The Major in Economics at Auckland Royal Academy provides a comprehensive foundation in economic theory and its application to the real-world challenges facing New Zealand and the global economy. Students study microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and a range of applied fields including labour economics, environmental economics, and public finance, developing the analytical framework and quantitative skills that distinguish economics graduates in a competitive employment market.
Research projects and applied economics courses connect theoretical study with New Zealand's economic institutions and policy debates. You will analyse data from Statistics New Zealand, the Reserve Bank, and international databases, developing the ability to form and test economic hypotheses with quantitative rigour. Guest lectures from senior economists in government, the private sector, and research institutions provide direct insight into economic careers and the practical application of economic reasoning.
Career Opportunities
Economics Major graduates work in government departments, commercial banks, regulatory agencies, research organisations, and management consulting. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Commerce Commission, and the major trading banks are among New Zealand employers who actively seek economics graduates for roles in economic analysis, policy advice, and market regulation.
Program Learning Outcomes
Apply microeconomic and macroeconomic principles to analyse market behaviour, evaluate economic policy, and assess the welfare effects of government intervention in New Zealand's goods, labour, and financial markets.
Demonstrate proficiency in econometric analysis using standard statistical software, applying regression techniques and causal inference methods to economic research questions using real New Zealand and international data.
Construct evidence-based economic arguments in written and oral formats, demonstrating the ability to communicate economic analysis clearly and persuasively to both specialist and general audiences in policy and business contexts.
