Overview
Interior Design at Auckland Royal Academy develops creative and technically skilled professionals who design interior spaces that are functional, beautiful, and responsive to the people who use them. The programme covers spatial planning, materials and finishes, lighting design, furniture and fixture selection, building construction, and project management, with particular attention to sustainability and the cultural contexts that shape New Zealand's interior design practice.
Studio projects span residential, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, and retail interior environments, developing your ability to respond to diverse client briefs with design solutions that balance aesthetic ambition, functional requirements, and budget constraints. Industry mentors, site visits to significant interior design projects across Auckland, and participation in design competitions provide exposure to professional practice throughout the programme.
Career Opportunities
Interior Design graduates from Auckland Royal Academy work as interior designers, spatial designers, furniture designers, and design consultants across residential, commercial, and hospitality sectors. Many establish their own design practices or join Auckland's leading interior design firms, contributing to the design of the spaces where New Zealanders live, work, and gather — from award-winning restaurants to innovative office environments and sustainable residential developments.
Program Learning Outcomes
Develop interior design concepts and produce full project documentation — including space planning drawings, mood boards, material schedules, and construction details — that meet professional standards and comply with New Zealand building regulations.
Apply knowledge of materials, finishes, lighting systems, and furniture design to create interior environments that are durable, maintainable, and aligned with sustainability principles including low-VOC materials, energy efficiency, and lifecycle considerations.
Communicate interior design ideas persuasively through presentation drawings, digital renders, physical models, and verbal pitches, demonstrating the professional communication skills required for effective client engagement and project management.
