Overview
Fine Arts at Auckland Royal Academy provides a challenging and supportive environment for the development of a rigorous and personally meaningful artistic practice. Spanning painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video art, and installation, the programme develops artists who combine technical mastery with conceptual depth, cultural awareness, and the professional capabilities needed to sustain a career in New Zealand's and the Pacific's contemporary art world.
Studio practice is at the centre of the programme, with dedicated studio space for each student and regular critiques with faculty, visiting artists, and peers that drive the development of your visual and conceptual voice. Engagement with Auckland's vibrant gallery scene, including visits to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, community galleries, and artist-run spaces, situates your practice within the broader context of contemporary New Zealand and international art.
Career Opportunities
Fine Arts graduates from Auckland Royal Academy pursue careers as practising artists, arts educators, gallery directors, arts administrators, and arts journalists. Many have exhibited nationally and internationally, received New Zealand government arts grants, and developed sustained professional art practices that contribute to New Zealand's distinctive cultural identity in the Pacific and globally.
Program Learning Outcomes
Develop a coherent and distinctive artistic practice across chosen media, demonstrating technical proficiency, conceptual rigour, and sustained engagement with ideas drawn from art history, critical theory, and contemporary cultural discourse.
Produce a body of work that demonstrates artistic maturity and professional presentation standards, including the ability to write artist statements, document work professionally, and present practice in gallery and public contexts.
Engage critically with New Zealand's bicultural artistic traditions and the diverse art practices of Pacific, Māori, and international artists, situating your own practice within the contemporary art landscape of the Asia-Pacific region.
