Overview
Energy System Management at Auckland Royal Academy prepares graduates to lead the transition to a sustainable, secure, and equitable energy future for New Zealand and the Pacific. The programme covers energy policy, renewable energy technologies, grid management, energy markets, and the economics of decarbonisation, equipping graduates to manage the complex systems and stakeholder relationships that underpin New Zealand's electricity, gas, and transport energy sectors.
Case studies examine New Zealand's electricity system — one of the world's highest-penetration renewable grids — alongside energy challenges in Pacific Island nations that are central to New Zealand's regional development responsibilities. Industry visits to power stations, grid infrastructure, and energy companies, combined with guest lectures from Transpower, Meridian Energy, and energy consultancies, connect academic learning with professional practice.
Career Opportunities
Energy System Management graduates work in energy utilities, electricity retailers, government ministries, regional councils, and energy consulting firms. Career pathways include energy systems analyst, policy adviser, renewable energy project manager, grid operations specialist, and sustainability manager — roles that are central to New Zealand's ambitious goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity and net-zero carbon emissions.
Program Learning Outcomes
Apply energy economics, systems engineering principles, and market design theory to analyse the performance, sustainability, and resilience of national and regional energy systems in the New Zealand context.
Evaluate renewable energy technologies — including wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal — and storage systems, assessing their technical, economic, and environmental suitability for integration into New Zealand's electricity grid.
Develop and appraise energy policy and regulatory frameworks that balance security of supply, economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to energy services for all New Zealanders.
