Overview
Architecture at Auckland Royal Academy integrates creative design thinking with technical precision to prepare graduates for a profession that shapes the built environment. Students study architectural history and theory, structural engineering principles, environmental sustainability, and design studio practice, producing graduates who can design buildings that are beautiful, functional, and responsive to the social and cultural context of New Zealand and the Pacific.
Design studio is at the heart of the programme — a collaborative, critique-driven environment where you develop projects from initial concept through to detailed technical drawings and physical or digital models. Field visits to significant architectural sites across Auckland, combined with workshops led by registered architects, expose you to the realities of professional practice, building codes, and client consultation.
Career Opportunities
Architecture graduates pursue registration as licensed architects, work in urban design practices, join engineering consultancies, or specialise in heritage conservation, sustainable design, or interior architecture. Our graduates have contributed to landmark buildings, urban renewal projects, and community housing initiatives across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.
Program Learning Outcomes
Produce design proposals that respond to site conditions, cultural context, and user needs, demonstrating proficiency in sketching, CAD, BIM software, and physical model making.
Apply knowledge of structural systems, building materials, and environmental performance to design buildings that meet New Zealand construction standards and sustainability requirements.
Evaluate the social, cultural, and environmental impact of architectural decisions, advocating for inclusive and ecologically responsible design in both urban and rural contexts.
